Cold War Battles
The Cold War was a 45 year long conflict between the United States of America and Russia (who changed their name to the USSSR or Soviet Union). This conflict was based on competition for power and resources. When Russia invaded Eastern Europe during World War II, they saw an opportunity to gain more land and power. After the war ended, Russia refused to leave Eastern Europe. This upset the United States. The United States did not want to engage in another war and lose more American lives in combat. They decided to try to make themselves appear more powerful than Russia in the hopes that Russia would avoid war as well. In addition, the United States devised a plan known as containment. This plan allowed Russia to hold on to their satellites in Eastern Europe, but pledged that the United States would intervene if Russia or Communism threatened any other countries. Listed below are many of the "battles" the United States fought during the Cold War. Use the videos and resources provided to complete your worksheet on the Cold War battles.
